What are remote entry systems for cars?
Keyless entry on a car or truck, sometimes referred to as passive entry, allows for more than a few perks. The most popular perk of keyless entry is the convenience it provides. Loaded down with groceries? You can still open your trunk with a wave of your foot, depending on the level of keyless entry installed on your vehicle. Additionally, you never have to struggle to get the key into the door lock, just press a button and go. Another big perk of keyless entry is the increased security it provides. The key has electronics inside that must be validated by your car before it will start the engine or open any doors. Some keyless entry systems will even lock your doors automatically when you walk away from the car. Finally, there’s the fun side of keyless entry, the remote start. Not all Keyless Systems are passive, but all Passive Entry systems are keyless entry systems. Here’s how it functions. Keyless calls for the car owner to use buttons to lock and unlock the vehicle doors and other features like opening the hatch. Passive Keyless is when you can keep your keys in your pocket (or purse) and you touch an area to lock and unlock the doors, or shake your foot underneath the vehicle to open the hatch area. One advantage of passive systems is that they generally include Keyless Ignition. Keyless Ignition allows drivers to start and drive their vehicle without the key fob ever leaving their pocket.
To be clear, Keyless Ignition and Remote Start are different features, even if they do similar things. Keyless Ignition lets you start and drive your car without the need for a standard key. Remote Ignition lets you start your car via the key fob or mobile application. Remote Ignition is helpful during extreme temperatures such as very cold or very hot days by letting you start the car and turn on the heat or AC. You will no longer get into a cold vehicle again, simply use the Remote Start and heat it up before you leave.
A Smart Key is the electronic portion of your key that is used to access your car remotely. The buttons for your wireless functions are located on the Smart Key itself. A Smart Key sends signals to the vehicle to lock the doors, open the trunk, and so on. Some vehicles won’t start without the Smart Key, as they are part of the security system.
